Hampshire Stately Homes

The county has been home to some of Britain's greatest historical and literary figures - and the Hampshire houses in which they lived and walked are open for you to enjoy. Among the grand stately homes in Hampshire, don’t miss Stansted Park, near Waterlooville, set in glorious parkland, as well as the more intimate surroundings of Jane Austen's home at Chawton.

The 18th century house at Houghton Lodge on the banks of the River Test is a popular TV and film location. Not to be missed is Gilbert White's House and gardens can be visited in the charming village of Selborne. Walk in the footsteps of Lord and Lady Crawley, Lady Edith, Lady Mary and the staff below stairs at Highclere Castle and Gardens near Newbury, where the popular TV series Downton Abbey was filmed. Stratfield Saye House, which became the Duke of Wellington's country estate in 1817 after his victory at Waterloo, is also well worth a visit.
 

The National Trust in Hampshire

Hampshire is well represented in the National Trust portfolio, including Mottisfont Abbey and Gardens, Uppark with its fine restored Georgian interiors, the formal gardens at Hinton Ampner and West Green House and Garden near Hook. As well as its beautiful gardens, The Vyne near Basingstoke is a wonderfully preserved Tudor house with its original furniture still intact.
 

English Heritage in Hampshire

There are plenty of English Heritage locations scattered across the county from The Grange at Northington, a 18th century period property with ancient Greek features. Or Titchfield Abbey built in the 13th century and was once home to Premonstratensian canons.
 

Castles in Hampshire

Hampshire has diverse range of castles, with so much history dating back from hundreds of years ago. Discover the Anglo Saxon Portchester Castle located in Fareham. Or head to the north of the county and see the ruins of Odiham Castle (also known as St King John’s Castle). Hurst Castle on the spit of land on from Milford on Sea is great for spectacular views of the Solent and Isle of Wight.

Winchester is home to mainy ruins of castles, in the heart of the city you can visit the Westgate and The Great Hall, which is home to King Arthurs Round Table. Wolvsey Castle was home to medieval Bishops due to the close vicinity to Winchester Cathedral.
